Almost Christmas!

Beavers out Hiking

The Beavers have been working hard on their Hillwalking badges, and recently, they had the chance to put their skills to the test on a night hike around Killiney Hill. They showcased everything they’d learned about the right clothes and gear to bring for a hike.

Dónal organized a fantastic treasure hunt, leading the Beavers on a loop around the hill in search of clues. Their efforts were rewarded when they returned to the base near the car park and unlocked a chest of treasure!

Coming up, we’re planning a longer hike in the beautiful surroundings of Cruagh Wood.

Scout Survival

Scout SurvivalLast week, the Scouts took on a crucial survival challenge: getting a fire started. To make it even tougher, we set the scene as a wet winter night, where dry kindling and sticks weren’t an option. Instead, they had to rely solely on dead, hanging branches.

The Scouts split into small groups, cutting the wood into logs and splitting them with axes. They used knives to baton the wood and tried crafting feathersticks for tinder.

Naturally, as soon as they had the fire going, roasting marshmallows became the top priority!

Cubs Clear for Takeoff

Cubs have been having fun working towards their air badge recently. They have been experimenting with paper airplane designs, testing parachutes, and most recently turning the den into an airport complete with check in, passport control and a departure lounge!

Den Upgrades

Work has begun on replacing the ceiling boards that had suffered water damage over the years. This will take a couple of weeks to complete as we discovered some issues with the existing wood frame.  Thanks to the leaders and parents for helping out in getting this crucial work done!

County Badges

Our scout county of ‘Cois Farraige’ which comprises of six scout groups, around Dalkey, Killiney, Shankill, Ballybrack and Rathmichael, is merging with the groups from Dún Laoghaire, Stillorgan, Blackrock, Cabinteely and Cornelscourt. Our new county is called ‘Dún Na Farraige’ and we’ll be giving out the new country badge, designed by scouts in the county, to all members at investiture.

The two counties have been working closely together for the past few years to pool resources and organise events together. The beaver day in Blackrock earlier this year being a great example of how our local scout groups can host activities and we expect that we’ll have more county activities during the year.

IT Equipment

As Scouting adapts to the modern world, we can now use laptops for a variety of activities, including radio communication, 3D mapping, hike planning, and more.

Some companies provide used equipment to support youth and community groups. If your employer has such a program, we would greatly appreciate the opportunity to connect with them!

Currently, we are specifically seeking laptops that can run Windows 10 or later, as well as a projector and projection screens.

If you can help us get in touch with someone who may be in a position to donate, please reach out! Thank you for your support!
